Forces Racism

The Canadian military is coming under fire for what three former members are calling systemic racism.

In a class action lawsuit filed against the Canadian Forces, claimants Marc Frenette, Wallace Fowler and Jean-Pierre Robillard all say they were the targets of harassment and their superior officers did nothing to stop it.

Frenette — who has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder — alleges he was told by superiors to laugh off the racist behaviour and not take his complaints up the chain of command.

CBRM Power

Cape Breton Regional Municipality will be getting more power next year to deal with its own affairs without needing provincial approval.

Mayor Cecil Clarke welcomed Premier McNeil’s commitment yesterday to grant a charter to the municipality. That will allow CBRM to do things like sign a 99 year lease for port development where the maximum now is a 20 year lease.

The legislation is expected in the spring.
