Parkland versus housing

People are gearing up to fight another effort by the city to sell off some parkland in the north end for development, according to CBC.

Part of the city’s growth strategy released by Mayor Don Darling this week included Tucker Park and land along Sandy Point Road. That tract was rezoned by council in 2011 to allow for a housing development…but the city backed down in the face of fierce opposition from residents.

Mayor Darling acknowledged the public protests back then, but says the city needs to grow so Sandy Point is back on the agenda.

Dennis Oland appeal

Dennis Oland’s lawyers are asking the Supreme Court of Canada to acquit their client not just order a new trial.

Documents filed with the court show the lawyers arguing his conviction was unreasonable and ran counter to evidence provided at trial by a man who was working in the office below Richard Oland’s the day he was murdered. Anthony Shaw testified he heard thumping noises coming from Richard Oland’s office at a time when Dennis Oland was seen on a security camera in Rothesay 15 minutes away.

They have also raised a number of other issues which they say should result in an acquittal.
