Deputy Mayor Shirley McAlary was glad to hear the province will be setting up an independant agency to do property assessments in the fuure. She told CBC she’s hoping that agency will handle industries as well as residential properties.
McAlary has been pushing for reform of the property tax system for some time and has felt a number of industries have not been assessed correctly.
The Premier’s office has now acklowedged it gave the go ahead to fast track adoption of the new property tax assment system…but Brian Gallant’s staff also deny they pressured Service New Brunswick to hurry it up.
New Brunswick Union president Susie Proulx-Daigle issued a statement saying assessors had nothing to do with the development and deployment of the formula. She said the blame for the problems is not with the assessors, but with the elected officials.
