Sexual crimes review

Justice and Public Safety Minister Denis Landry has received preliminary reports from several police chiefs as part of a review of how sexual crime complaints are handled. Landry asked each police chief to review cases that had been closed as unfounded from 2010 to 2014.

He says the government will determine if there are issues common to police forces and assess whether any followup is required by the province or Ottawa.

Bill introduced to penalize countries for human rights abuses

Ottawa is going to crack down on countries with terrible human rights records.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland introduced legislation last night to expand international sanctions against gross human rights violators.  The bill is similiar to laws passed in other countries in honour of Russian whistleblower Sergei Magnitsky, who died in prison after accussing Russian officials of a $230 million tax fraud.
