Canadian police may head to Afghanistan

NATO is asking Canada to send police to Afghanistan to help train that country’s security forces.

NATO members will gather in Brussels later this month to announce what they can provide. Canada ended its military mission there three years ago.  158 soldiers, one diplomat and one journalist were killed during the Canadian mission in Afghanistan which began in 2001.

Another yacht rescue

Another competitor in that trans-Atlantic race had to be rescued yesterday off the southeast coast of Newfoundland.

The Halifax Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre sent two aircraft to rescue the sailor who was airlifted from his boat which was damaged in heavy, stormy seas. The Royal Western Yacht Club of England says four vessels have so far required assistance in the rough conditions, a higher number than in previous years. 13 of them have dropped out of the race.
