Chief Justice of SCOC retiring

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada is retiring. Beverley McLachlin will step down in mid-December as the first female chief justice…and the longest serving.

Federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould says McLachlin should be celebrated for helping to frame Canada’s justice system. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says her judicial accomplishments are unparalleled.

Opiate overdose problem

Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott says governments, both provincially and federally, need to take bold action to treat drug users…and do it without judgement.

Philpott told a national meeting of health-care executives more people are expected to die from opioid overdoses this year compared to last when there were almost 2,458 overdose deaths.
