Thousands lose jobs at Sears

Industry experts are calling it part of the demise of the department store chain. Sears Canada is closing 59 stores across the country, including Saint John, and slashing 2,900 jobs under a court-supervised restructuring plan.

Sears locations in Saint John and Bathurst are among those set to close.  The restructuring will see the Moncton and Fredericton locations stay open, and doesn’t affect plans for new call centres.

Marketing experts say many department stores lost touch and stopped responding to the needs of consumer years ago as they began shopping online.

City still trying to block class-action lawsuit

The City of Saint John continues to try to block a class-action lawsuit brought by the victims of Ken Estabrooks who abused children while working as a cop and then in the works department.

The city’s lawyers filed papers in the Court of Appeal trying to overturned the decision by Justice William Grant in February to certify the suit as a class-action.  Michael Brenton confirmed he was at the Court of Appeal yesterday to argue the city’s case for leave to appeal, but wouldn’t provide details.
