Diamond heist pair get more time to find lawyer

A man and woman asked for more time in court yesterday to find a lawyer to defend them against charges of stealing a $10,000 diamond from W. Smith Jewelers.

70 year old Grigori Zaharov and 44 year old Natalia Feldman complained he couldn’t reach a lawyer because he had difficulty making calls from jail…said his calls were being cut off after one minute. The Russian-speaking pair will be back in court Monday and remain in custody for now

Supreme Court hearings on bail for convicted murderers

The Supreme Court of Canada heard legal arguments yesterday about when a convicted murderer should receive bail pending an appeal.

Dennis Oland’s lawyer say their client does not want to be haunted by the prospect of another unsuccessful bail hearing should his second murder trial take an unfortunate turn.

The Supreme Court justice questioned whether Oland being out on bail now makes the point moot…but interveners, including the attorneys-general of three provinces…say rules for such bail provisions must be clarified.
