Muskrat Falls flooding begins

Water levels have started to rise at the Muskrat Falls hydro project in Labrador.

Premier Dwight Ball confirmed flooding of a reservoir near Happy Valley-Goose Bay has begun. He says the initial flooding will bring water levels up to where they usually are in the spring runoff.

Three aboriginal governments issued a joint statement saying the flooding is necessary…but that more effort is needed to prevent mercury contamination.

First Nations sexual abuse

Prominent First Nations leaders say the time has come to shine a light on a taboo subject in their communities…sexual abuse of children. The national chief of the Assembly of First Nations says leaders must stand up and encourage people to expose the problem.

Research shows one in three girls and one in six boys have experienced an unwanted sexual act. Experts say it’s difficult getting hard data because such abuse often remains shrouded in silence.
