Group pushes for more public funding of abortions

The Gallant Government is under pressure to fund private-clinic abortions.

Allison Webster of Reproductive Justice New Brunswick says this is the only province where abortions are available in private clinics, but not funded by the province. Webster says Premier Gallant vowed in the election campaign to remove all barriers to abortion access.

Health Minister Victor Boudreau says there are currently no plans to extend abortion coverage to private clinics. Boudreau says the three hospitals where abortions are currently offered are meeting demand.
