The province’s new contraband enforcement unit has seized 327,000 illegal cigarettes in Saint John.
Two men were arrested in the raids which came after searches at nine locations in the Saint John area, according to the Telegraph-Journal. and one more arrest is coming.
In addition to seizing illegal cigarettes with an estimated tax value of $72,000, police confiscated $45,000 in cash.
Common Councl is expected to discuss how much money it makes at the meeting Monday.
A report from an external consultant on council salaries is on the agenda, according to the Telegraph-Journal…but no details have been released.
The bylaw governing council salaries hasn’t been updated in 15 years. It says the Mayor makes $38,000 in annual salary plus an allowance of $19,000 for expenses. Councillors are paid $12,666 a year with an allowance of $6,333. That’s what was set in 2001.
