Shediac area firefighters who freed a moose from the frozen Shediac River will be honoured.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is sending a Compassionate Fire Department Award to the Shediac Fire Department.

Video was posted of last weekend’s rescue.  At first, the moose appeared agitated by the axe-swinging firefighters, but soon calmed down. They managed to smash a path through the ice and the moose got to shore, climbed the riverbank and headed back into the woods.

PETA is sending the fire department a letter of congratulations, a box of vegan cookies and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a Texas firefighter’s plant-based eating program.

A new report says only half of youth seeking provncial mental health services get it within 30 days. The State of the Child Report also says the rate of youth hospitalization for mental disorders is higher than the national average.

Child and Youth Advocate Norm Bosse calls it a deepening problem with rising depression and anxiety being experienced by youth. However he is encouraged that the province is putting more money into services to help young people with mental health needs.
