Great White cruising in Minas Basin

A scientist says an abundance of seals is likely the reason why a 300km great white shark has been swimming around Minas Basin.

The 2.7-metre female shark, nicknamed Pumpkin by researchers, was detected off Cheverie by an acoustic monitoring system that picked up a transmitter placed on the shark last year.  Fred Whoriskey of the Ocean Tracking Network at Dalhousie says Pumpkin’s appearance could signal that ecosystems are bouncing back. It’s hoped the tracking work will help fill the information gap about great whites, not just around here but around the world.

Trump bans transgender troops

President Donald Trump, in a series of Tweets, said he was banning transgender troops from serving anywhere in the military. That brought swift condemnation from a number of people including former vice-president Al Gore who said he doubted Trump talked to top military commanders before making his decision as he claimed.
Meanwhile, our military says it is continuing to work on improvements to its transgender policy which is expected to be updated this fall.

DND, which lifted its ban on transgender people and L-G-B-T members in 1992, responded in a tweet that it welcomes Canadians of all sexual orientations and gender identities.
