CBU offering refugees help settling in Cape Breton

Cape Breton University is offering help for refugees settling on the island.

10 bursaries will go to refugees who didn’t have a chance to finish diplomas or school in their homeland. Settlement Councillor Sohila Abdo told CBC Syrian families have expressed interest, especially parents who never had such a chance.

Special flood debris landfill

A lot of flood damaged debris is piling up at the special landfill set up for the purpose.

CBRM Solid Waste Manager Francis Campbell told CBC 4,000 tonnes have been picked up at the curbs and hauled to the site since the floods. Normal weekly pickups usually result in 700-800 tonnes. Even the Heavy garbage pickup in the spring usually nets about 2,500 tonnes. Campbell says you can see people’s entire households there.
