Bus fares rise in New Year

You’re going to have to pay more to ride the buses next year, according to CBC.

Codiac Transpo has announced cash fares are rising by a quarter to $2.50. Passes will cost $1 more per year. It also points out these are the first fare increases in five years…but Moncton still has the lowest ones in the province.

Codiac Transpo also said the free Wednesday service for seniors will continue as well as discounts on monthly passes to seniors and students. Children under 5 will continue to ride for free as will CNIB cardholders/attendants.

Free speech on campus

According to the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, more than 25 out of 60 Canadian universities fail the campus free speech test.

That organization says Mount Allison earned a grade of “F” for providing a very poor policy framework around free expression and academic freedom. The Centre says Mount A maintains speech code-rules, which prohibit speech that could be considered controversial or offensive.

In addition, some student unions earned an “F” for their imposition of speech codes, including the one at Mt. A.
