New Digby Neck ferry

A ferry will be named in honour of Margaret Davis nearly 200 years after her trek across Nova Scotia.

The Grand Passage ferry at Brier Island has been christened Margaret’s Justice to commemorate the 63 year old widow’s fight to save her home in 1828 from an unscrupulis neighbour. She walked from Brier Island to Halifax to make sure her land was registered in her name.

The $9.3 million ferry will begin service next month.

Moose cull protest

About half a dozen protestors blocked a highway near Cape Breton Highlands National Park Saturday.

They were protesting the cull of moose by Mi’Kmaq hunters. Organizer Dennis Day told CBC they feel the park should be a sanctuary not a slaughterhouse.

Parks Canada has said research shows the moose population in the park is about 1,800 and hastening vegetation loss in the forests.
