No weddings this year at Bates Barn

Couples who had been planning to get married at the Bates Barn in Kings County this year will have to find somewhere else.

The barn burned down last week in a fire that is believed to have been deliberately set. Owner Janice Bates was hoping to make repairs and get the picturesque barn open in time for the spring and summer wedding season by using a big tent…but she told the Kings County Record that’s just not financially feasible. They are still planning to rebuild but there’s no guarntee that’ll be done this year.

Lost hikers found thanks to smartphone

A family of hikers was found by RCMP after getting lost in Irishtown Nature Park yesterday afternoon.

The Mounties tracked them down by using the GPS on their smart Phones to determine their position. Two officers walked into the woods, located them, and then led them out to safety within a few minutes. An ambulance was called but nobody was hurt.

RCMP are encuraging people to stick to the trails when hiking in the woods, take food and water in case you get lost…and a smartphone or GPS device is recommended.
