Sentencing hearing in kidnapping

A sentencing hearing was held yesterday for a man convicted of kidnapping a woman to prevent her from testifying against him at trial. He was charged with assaulting her and threatening her.

The Crown asked the judge to give 35 year old John Phillip “BJ” Trecartin eight years minus 21 months he has spent on remand. Trecartin’s lawyer asked for time served and probation.

Trecatin was convicted on nine counts including obstruction of justice, unlawful confinement and assault. The woman can’t be named to protect her identity. The judge will deliver his sxentence April 10th.

More parking tickets being written

The number of parking tickets for overnight parking has spiked this winter.

Public Works Director Don Morehouse told the Times and Transcript it’s because they have a second bylaw officer on duty. Between December 1st and February 22nd, they wrote 1,432 tickets compared to 916 in the same period last year.

Morehouse says the additional officer has helped keep vehicles off the roads when crews are trying to clear snow. He also says the officers sometimes will go knock on a door and ask that a car be moved and residents have been compliant.
