Councillors want more affordable housing

Regional Council has asked staff to prepare a report on options for more affordable housing, according to the Chronicle Herald.

Subsidized housing is a provincial responsibility but councillors want to know what they can do. That could include waiving municipal fees and permit costs for buildings with affordable units. There could be multi-year tax relief plans or getting Halifax water to align its fees to support such projects.

Man charged in three robberies

A 29 year old Halifax man is facing various charges after three holdups yesterday morning.

The first was at BP Corner News and then the Dollarama store at Scotia Square a little after 9:30. A man walked in, picked up some items then demanded cash when he got to the counter. Several minutes later a man entered the Griffin’s Smoke Shop on Mumford Road demanding cash. But at that one a security guard and store employee chased him down and held him for police. Nobody was hurt in any of the incidents.
