Doctors launch “Legal Not Safe”

The province’s medical society is launching a public education campaign called Legal Not Safe.

Society president Dr. Lynn Murphy-Kaulbeck says the legalization of recreational marijuana next year doesn’t make it safe and there are risks, particularly for younger people. The society says marijuana use is linked to addiction, psychiatric disorders, attention deficits and can significantly harm brain development in people under the age of 25. So while it may become legal, doctors want smokers to understand that doesn’t mean it’s safe.

Report on deadly fishing accident due this week

The Transportation Safety Board will release the results this week of its investigation into the fatal capsizing of a fishing vessel off the Acadian Peninsula last year.

Two fishermen died and another man was taken to hospital after a fishing boat capsized last June off a wharf near Salmon Beach, about 10 kilometres from downtown Bathurst. RCMP said it appeared fishing gear was snared at the bottom of the bay and a wave overturned the boat.
