Pool rally at city hall

Several dozen people rallied at Moncton City Hall yesterday to try to save their community swimming pool.

The pool at the Moncton East Youth Centre was drained three years ago because of a leak…and still remains empty. Area MLAs Cathy Rogers, Chris Collins and Monique LeBlanc joined the protestors in calling on the city to save the pool.  Rogers told the Times and Transcript the province has already approved a million dollars for it a couple of years ago and anticipated it would be done.

After initially saying the pool project had been cancelled, Mayor Dawn Arnold now says a proper public pool would cost about $2 million. Council is expected to make a decision May15th.

First Nations to banish drug dealers

Two New Brunswick band councils are dealing with drug problems in their First Nations communities by moving to banish anyone convicted of dealing drugs.

The Tobique and Esgenoopetitj First Nations are discussing band council resolutions to try to get rid of drug dealers from their communities as has been done on First Nations in other parts of the country.

Richard Moulton, a band councillor at Tobique First Nation, told the Times and Transcript they know they have a drug problem in their community and drug dealers, so they are taking any means neccessary to protect community members by banishing them.

A funeral was held yesterday for a 35 year old Esgenoopetitj woman who died suddenly last Tuesday. The cause of death is still under investigation but family members suspect it was a drug overdose.
