Maine dropping vaccination baits

Wildlife officials have been spreading baits around southwest New Brunswick in hopes raccoons will eat them and get a dose of anti-rabies vaccine.

Efforts are also underway in northeastern Maine with 350,000 baits spread by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.  State Veterinarian Dr. Michele Walsh says cases have been identified in areas of new Brunswick where rabies has been absent for a couple of decades.

Right Whale deaths

The federal fisheries department is investigating after the remains of two more endangered Right Whales washed ashore on the west coast of Newfoundland.

That brings the total of confirmed deaths to at least nine. One of the latest discoveries wasn’t counted in the total because it was among the ones previously spotted floating in the Gulf. Scientists are still working to determine the cause of the deaths but say it appears ship strikes account for some and entanglement in fishing gear in others.
