Not much burning in NB woods this year

The forest fire season in the province this year is off to a pretty slow start thanks to the pretty wet spring.

There have been fewer fires so far this year compared to previous years. Roger Collet, a wildfire prevention officer, says 236 fires had already scorched about 223 hectares by this time last year…but so far this year, there have only been 78 fires covering about 34 hectares.

Some evacuees are being allowed back into their homes in British Columbia but 19,000 are still under orders to stay away.

An estimated 377,000 hectares of land has been scorched by the wildfires. Officials are warning people to be prepared to leave home again quickly, because the worst fires typically occur at the end of July.
