HMCS Vancouver helping earthquake victims

A Canadian frigate is helping with recovery efforts after the earthquake in New Zealand.

HMCS Vancouver was one of many ships visiting New Zealand this week as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of its navy.  The Vancouver arrived off Kaikoura on the south island yesterday and will help in humanitarian efforts in the resort town which has been cut off from the rest of the country. It’ll join American warships in restocking the town with water, fuel and other supplies.

Canadian special forces vs I-SIS

The head of the military’s special forces says his troops aren’t involved in what he calls offensive combat operations in Iraq. However, Major-General Mike Rouleau admits the number of times Canadian troops have fired on militants first has increased. He told reporters our troops have destroyed three explosives-laden vehicles that were threatening Kurdish allies. His comments came after opposition MPs raised questions about just what Canada’s role is in the fight against I-SIS.
