The Gallant Government is putting midwives under the provincial health-care system.

Horizon Health says midwives will provide comprehensive care during normal, low-risk pregnancies, labour and postpartum care. Horizon will manage a demonstration site in Fredericton. A lead midwife will help in developing policies then three more midwives will be recruited once the policies are in place.

Pharmacies across the province are now hooked into the new Drug Information System.

That gives real-time medication history for any patient. The government is also enhancing its prescription monitoring program so alerts will help doctors and pharmacists identify potential issues such as so-called double-doctoring where people gop to more than one doctor to get more drugs
