Riverview taxes

Riverview Town Council has decided to increase the property tax rate for the first time since 2010. It’ll rise two cents per $100 of assessment.

It’ll mean an increase of about $30 for the average home assessed at $150,000. Council also approved an increse in water bills of $20 a year.

Mayor Ann Seamans told the Times and Transcript the 2 cent hike will generate about $300,000 more next year which will be put into a reserve fund to pay for future projects, especially with the Transaqua waste water project ahead.

Downtown fire

Two people were taken to hospital from a fire in downtown Moncton yesterday morning.

Construction workers who were nearby saw the fire and rushed into the small apartment house, according to the Times and Transcript, to get the residents out. The fire department says it was a two storey house that had been divided into three apartments. The cause of the fire isn’t known. It doesn’t appear the injuries were too serious.
