Riverview Teacher Finalist for 1.3 Million-Dollar Teaching Prize

A high school teacher in Riverview has been nominated for the world’s richest teaching award. Armand Doucet, who teaches at Riverview High School, has made the top 50 for the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize for 2017. Doucet has already won provincial and national awards for his teaching methods. A Varkay Foundation release says the top 50 finalists were selected from over 20-thousand nominations from all over the world. The final 10 candidates will be announced in February with the winner announced at a conference in Dubai in March. The winner will be awarded a 1.3-million-dollar grand prize.

New Bridge to Restore Petitcodiac River

Environmentalists are hailing a decision to remove a causeway that has partially blocked New Brunswick’s Petitcodiac River for nearly 50 years. The provincial and federal governments have announced a 61.6-million dollar project to remove a 250-metre section of the causeway and replace it with a four-lane bridge. The causeway links Moncton and Riverview. But it also blocks a habitat for fish to spawn and stifles the river’s famous tidal bore — the large wave that rolls in when the tide is on the rise in the nearby Bay of Fundy.
