Accused murderer’s mother found unfit for trial

The mother of accused murderer Marissa Shephard has been deemed unfit for trial on theft charges, according to CBC.

50 year old Christine Helene Carson stole cigarettes from gas stations in the Moncton area. She was sent for a psychiatric evaluation and has been found unfit for trial or to be held criminally responsible.

The review board will now decide her fate…whether she’ll be committed to a psychiatric institution or be allowed to live in the community, either with supervision or not.

Shediac taxes

Shediac will be holding the line on taxes this year, although water rates will climb a little.

Mayor Jacques Leblanc issued a news release saying the tax rate will stay at $1.4784 per $100 of assessment for a 16th consecutive year.

LeBlanc says the town’s tax base increase by about 3%, but there was also a decrease in the grant from the province and an increase in RCMP costs.

Major capital projects next year include a new town work’s centre, improvements to Chesley Street and the final phase of the downtown revitalization.
