Cornwallis controversy

Mayor Mike Savage is speaking out against a plan to tear down the statue of Edward Cornwallis in a south end park on the weekend.

Savage issued a statement yesterday saying any action to remove the statue is not condoned by the Nova Scotia Assembly of Mi’kmaq Chiefs. A group of indigenous protestors has said it plans to remove the statue Saturday.

The mayor says he understand that many Indigenous people and others disagree with the continued presence of Cornwallis in the park…but the city is working on a solution to the controversy.

Guns

There were a couple of weapons arrests last night.

Police arrested a man around 6:00 o’clock on an outstanding assault case on Jacobs Lane. They seized marijuanna and a gun. A 29 year old man will be in court at a later date on drug and weapons counts.

Then at about 11:40, they stopped a vehicle on Barrington Street, arrested a 16 year old boy and seized a loaded gun. He’ll be in court today on weapons charges.
