Ceremony marking Battle of the Atlantic anniversary

The public is invited to attend the Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic Ceremony to commemorate the sacrifices made by the thousands of Canadians who fought so valiantly in the North Atlantic. The ceremony will take place at 10:55 a.m. Sunday, at the Naval Memorial at Point Pleasant Park.

Each year on the first Sunday in May, Canada and its naval community commemorate those lost at sea in the longest single campaign of the Second World War.

The Battle of the Atlantic was the fight for supremacy in the North Atlantic and lasted 2,075 days. It pitted Allied naval and air forces against German and Italian submarines, ships and aircraft whose primary targets were the convoys of merchant ships carrying vital life-sustaining cargo from North America to Europe.

Bridgewater police chief charged

The head of SIRT Ron MacDonald says he’s seen a number of officers investigated, but this was the first time he’s seen a police chief charged with sexually assaulting a teenaged girl.

SIRT laid one charge of sexual assault and two charges of sexual exploitation against Bridgewater police Chief John Collyer. The girl was 17 years old at the time of the alleged offences last year. Charges were laid this week because of recent documentary evidence received last week.

Collyer was placed on administrative leave last August after it became public that SIRT was investigating an alleged sexual assault. He’ll be in court next month.
