Temporary soccer stadium approved for Wanderers Grounds

The Wanderers Grounds will be the site of a temporary, pop-up, soccer stadium, boosting hopes a professional soccer team will soon follow.

Regional Council gave unanimous approval to a rental agreement for the stadium which will have temporary stands to seat up to 7,000 to watch the team which would be part of a new professional Canadian soccer league.

The Friends of Halifax Common have concerns about noise levels, parking and other issues, saying the Wanderers Grounds are already heavily used.

Devonshire Arena due for the wrecking ball

A longtime fixture in the north end of Halifax will come down next year, according to CBC.

The Devonshire arena will be demolished but the city will hold on to the land for a possible future community centre. Council has also approved tearing down the Gray Arena in Dartmouth and the LeBrun Arena in Bedford. Both sites will be offer to coimmunity groups for non-profit uses.

As for the future of the Halifax Forum, council wants more studies done before making a decision on demolishing it.
