Teacher’s Strike

Nova Scotia Opposition Tory Leader Jamie Baillie says there is no downside for the government to accept mediation in a contract dispute with public school teachers.

Baillie is also questioning the premier’s assertion that more money for teachers would have to come from another part of the budget.

Premier Stephen McNeil expressed frustration in the legislature yesterday after teachers twice rejected contract offers that had been recommended by the union’s executive.

He said teachers have one of the best pension plans around, generous health benefits, and accumulate 195 sick days over their career.

Remembrance Day Spat

A miscommunication is being blamed for a Remembrance Day-related spat between a Cape Breton craft association and several local legions.

The Home Crafters of Cape Breton always hold their three-day annual craft sale at Centre 200 in Sydney and they booked it years ago.

But this year, Remembrance Day falls on the first day of the sale and while the legions had made arrangements to get the big hall, the ceremony is being moved to a smaller one.

Some angry residents have taken to social media to criticize the craft group but the crafters and the legions say the mixup is not their fault.
