Two hospitals flooded

Two hospitals in the western part of the province suffered flood damage on the weekend.

A pipe burst at Yarmouth Regional Hospital Saturday causing extensive flooding and damage to the diagnostic imaging department and cafeteria. Some patients also had to be moved to other sections.

There was also a pipe burst at Queens General Hospital in Liverpool flooding a wing that houses rehabilitation services.

Dead herring continue to wash ashore

Schools of dead herring continue to wash ashore in St. Mary’s Bay and Annapolis Basin and scientists still have no idea why.

Officials at D-F-O say numerous tests have failed to identify any viruses or disease that could explain the thousands of dead fish. Surveillance of the area also seems to rule out the idea that predators may have chased the fish ashore. Testing for more obscure toxins continues.

Anyone coming across dead fish on the shore is urged to call D-F-O with estimates of numbers and location…and, as a precaution, don’t touch them.
