Ottawa’s approval of the Trans Mountain oil pipeline is being challenged by a number of groups in court in Vancouver.

They argue the pipeline’s impact on endangered Orcas which live in Georgia Strait was not taken into account.

The cities of Vancouver and Burnaby have also launched lawsuits as have four First Nations.

Many, including people in the energy industry, were scratching their hands over an announcement by the Trudeau Government yesterday that it is moving to ban offshore oil and gas licensing in the Canadian Arctic. It was part of a joint announcement with the U-S.

There are currently no plans to drill in the area.

Professor Michael Byers at UBC thinks the announcement may be designed to show Trudeau is protecting the environment since his government is under a lot of fire over the recent approval of two oil pipelines.
