Hundreds Expected to Take Polar Bear Dip in Halifax Today

Brave souls will be plunging into the new year with a frosty dip in the Atlantic today. The Herring Cove Polar Bear Dip has drawn about 200 people into Halifax Harbour in recent years. This year Halifax Water has taken precautions to assure swimmers the harbour is safe to enter. The utility turned its ultraviolet lights back on to ensure bacteria levels in the harbour are within swimming guidelines. The Icy swim gets underway at noon.

19-Year-Old in Custody after Gun Seized

A 19-year-old man was taken into custody after a gun was seized from a residence in Clayton Park on Saturday morning. Halifax police say they executed a search warrant at a residence on Westridge Street around 7am. A firearm was seized and the 19-year-old was taken into custody. Police say the investigation is ongoing and they’ve yet to determine if charges will be laid.
