Campbellton racial profiling case rejected

Judge Suzanne Bernard has nixed a Campbellton man’s claim that he was given a seatbelt ticket because of his race.

70 year old Gordon Hum was found guilty of a seatbelt infraction after a trial on March 29th.

Hum claimed that RCMP Constable Stephane Dugas only stopped him because he is not white.

When the officer asked where he was from, Hum became angry; telling the officer that he had no right to ask questions on ethnic origin.

Judge Bernard ruled that the fact that he asked Hum where he was from may in fact be irrelevant, but nothing in the facts suggest that he stopped Hum as a result of racial profiling.
