The province’s medical society is launching a public education campaign called Legal Not Safe.
Society president Dr. Lynn Murphy-Kaulbeck says the legalization of recreational marijuana next year doesn’t make it safe and there are risks, particularly for younger people. The society says marijuana use is linked to addiction, psychiatric disorders, attention deficits and can significantly harm brain development in people under the age of 25. So while it may become legal, doctors want smokers to understand that doesn’t mean it’s safe.
