The three levels of government have pledged over $15 million for the cleanup of the LaHave River.
The money will go mainly to helping homeowners along the river to install septic systems because right now there are about 600 pipes dumping raw sewage straight into the water.
The cleanup is in large part thanks to a 13 year old girl, according to CBC. Stella Bowes was told by her mother in 2015 she couldn’t go swimming in the river because it was too dirty. Bowes, as a school science project, began testing the water for contamination and posting the results on Facebook. That caught the attention of the municipal politicians who got to work on fixing the problem.
