A victims’ services worker for the police told a council committee there are only three convictions for every one-thousand alleged sexual assaults. Angela Jeffrey Haynes also said only 33 are reported to police, 12 lead to charges and just three end with convictions.
She said barriers to reporting sexual assaults include fear of revenge, concerns that police won’t take the case seriously and what she describes as secondary wounding when people blame victims or make them feel ashamed.
