Ottawa and the province have announced a total of $3 million for upgrades to the infrastructure at Parlee Beach and studies on the water quality problem.
CBC reports the beach will also be declared a unique feature of the environment meaning there will be an automatic review of any future developments to see if an environmental impact assessment is needed. There will also be upgrades at the Parlee Beach Provincial Park sewage lift stations, the Murray Beach sewage lagoon, upgraded pump-out stations for boats as well as education priograms and enforcement of things like dog droppings.
Lois Corbett, executive director of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick, called the funding an important step…but that pressures from development won’t be solved by the spending announced yesterday. Some area residents were disappointed there wasn’t a moratorium on future development.
