The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board has a new Chair: Darren Googoo of Membertou. It’s the first time a Mi’kmaq has been chosen to head a school board in Nova Scotia, according to the Cape Breton Post. The board tried to elect a chair last fall after the elections but it ended up a tie between Lorne Green and John Berk. So it became the responsibility of the provincial government to choose and it picked Googoo. He is a teacher with a masters of education degree. He is chair of the Council on Mi’kmaq Education among other positions and has three children in the school system.
