Lawyers for former Africville residents have been in court this week arguing in favour of a class-action lawsuit against the city for more compensation for the expropriation of the land for the MacKay bridge.
The 30 residents refused to sign a settlement agreement with the city in 2010 for compensation. If the suit is certified as a class action, as many as 300 other former residents could sign on. Their lawyer Robert Pineo says they are suing for loss of communal lands…for the loss of their community…not just their homes.
