The name Cornwallis may not be on parks and streets much longer in Halifax.
Regional council has voted to put together an expert panel to advise it on whether Edward Cornwallis’ name should be removed from municipal properties. Councillor Shawn Cleary introduced the motion and said we’re building a new relationship with the Indigenous community in Canada and we need to do that in Halifax as well. It passed 15-1.
Cornwallis Junior High was renamed in 2011, but the founder of Halifax’s name is still on parks and streets.
