Halifax’s first Mi’kmaq poet laureate is using her words to try to change Regional Council’s mind on renaming places commemorating the city’s founder Edward Cornwallis.
Last Tuesday, Rebecca Thomas used a poem to take council to task for shutting down debate last May on removing the Cornallis name from landmarks. Councillor Shawn Cleary said Thomas’s words were so powerful, he felt compelled to ask council to revisit the issue.
